Happy New Year, one and all!
If you’re already a member of our Kilted Ancestors Facebook Group, you’ll know that we share prompts each month to encourage members to discuss family stories or discoveries they’ve made while researching their family tree.
While we don’t have a specific theme for 2025, most of the year’s prompts will touch on Social History and how your ancestors lived.
Genealogy is about more than names, dates, and places on a chart. By understanding how your ancestors lived, you can gain a true sense of their daily lives and the events in history that shaped them.
Here are this year’s monthly topics:
January: "New Year, New Discoveries" What are your genealogy goals for this year? Is there a Scottish ancestor you hope to learn more about or a family tradition you want to uncover?
February: "Love and Legacy" Do you know the love story of any Scottish ancestors? Share a photo, document, or story about a couple in your family tree.
March: "Highland Highlights" Have you visited or researched a Scottish place connected to your ancestors? Share your findings, photos, or plans to explore these places!
April: "Festivals and Events" Did your Scottish ancestors participate in local fairs, Highland games, societies, or other events? Share details about their community activities.
May: "Occupations of the Past" What did your Scottish ancestors do for a living? Share stories or records about their trades, crafts, or professions.
June: "Firsts in Family History" Share a story of a first in your family—first to marry, emigrate, or own land in Scotland.
July: "Scottish Summer Days" Do you know how your ancestors might have spent their summers? Share a story or artifact that gives insight into their lives during this season.
August: "Family Mysteries" Is there a mystery in your family tree you’d love to solve? Share it with the group for inspiration or help.
September: "Back to School – Genealogy Style" What’s a lesson or discovery you’ve learned while researching your Scottish roots? Share a tip or story to help inspire others.
October: "Haunted Histories" Does your family tree have any ghost stories or eerie connections? Share any spooky tales tied to your Scottish heritage.
November: "War and Remembrance" Do you have ancestors who served in Scottish regiments or were involved in conflicts? Share their stories to honour their memory.
December: "Winter in Scotland" How might your ancestors have coped with Scottish winters? Share stories or records of seasonal challenges.
